In a significant move to reform the educational assessment landscape in India, the government has launched the National Assessment Centre, known as PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development). This centre is a key component of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which envisions a more holistic, flexible, and multidisciplinary education system. PARAKH aims to standardise and enhance the assessment process across different states and boards in India, ensuring that students are evaluated based on their understanding and application of knowledge rather than rote memorisation.
One of the primary objectives of PARAKH is to bring uniformity to the diverse assessment methods currently employed across the country. India has a vast and varied education system, with different states following different boards, each with its own set of evaluation criteria. This lack of standardisation often leads to disparities in student performance assessments, creating challenges for students, especially those moving between states. PARAKH seeks to address these inconsistencies by developing a common set of assessment guidelines that will be implemented nationwide.
The centre will focus on competency-based assessments that emphasise critical thinking, problem-solving, and the practical application of knowledge. This approach aligns with global educational standards and aims to better prepare Indian students for the demands of the 21st century. PARAKH will also work on developing assessment tools and resources that support teachers in evaluating students more effectively.
Additionally, PARAKH will play a crucial role in conducting large-scale assessments and surveys to gauge the overall learning outcomes of students across the country. These assessments will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of the education system and inform policy decisions aimed at improving the quality of education. By standardising student assessments and promoting a more comprehensive evaluation process, PARAKH is set to transform the educational landscape in India, ensuring that students are assessed fairly and accurately.
